2023 Summer Camp Guide

Advice for Parents

Summertime is just around the corner, and for parents thinking about enrolling their children in camp, now is the time to explore the wide variety of options for outdoor fun and adventure.

Yet with so many choices - and concerns about the lingering pandemic - searching for the right camp program can feel overwhelming.

To help families navigate the summer camp journey, our team at Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore has developed steps to take and questions to ask based on our insights and experience operating outdoor day camps for over 50 years, including a successful COVID-free camp season last summer.

Map Out Your Family & Child’s Needs

Before you even begin scoping out camps, think about your child’s interests and the kind of camp experiences that will help your child thrive. Also consider your family’s needs in terms of camp hours, opening and closing dates, distance, transportation, availability of meals and snacks, and extended care options.

Establishing your needs and preferences ahead of time will help guide you and keep you focused on the best match for your child and family.

Do Some Research

Once you’ve identified the camps that you’re interested in, do some research. Visit the camp websites. Find out about tuition fees and what’s included. Do they offer financial assistance? Check out reviews and testimonials on the Internet, and, most important, get direct feedback from friends and neighbors whose children attended.

Visit & Explore

Next, schedule appointments for your family and future camper to visit the camps, meet the staff, and get a flavor for a typical day at camp, including the mix of activities, camp schedule and traditions.  Find out if child will be able to make choices about activities and interests at camp. Be sure to determine the camp’s ratio of staff to campers and whether your camper will remain with the same group all day.

Before you head out to camp, jot down your questions. Here are several to help you gauge health and safety, staff experience and training:

Check Out Health & Safety Guidelines

  • Is the camp accredited by the American Camp Association? ACA provides a seal of approval to over 2,400 camps that meet nearly 300 standards.
  • Does the camp follow current CDC, state, and local guidelines for COVID-19 health and safety protocols?
  • Is there a daily health screening for camp counselors/staff, campers, and family members at camp drop off? What does it include?
  • How does the camp respond to a positive COVID-19 case?
  • Does the camp have a health supervisor? What are the supervisor’s credentials?
  • How does the camp accommodate children who have special health needs, such as allergies, asthma, or diabetes?
  • Do counselors and other camp staff have necessary certifications for CPR, first aid, lifeguarding, archery, boating and other activities?

Evaluate the Camp Team

  • Does the camp conduct criminal background checks on staff and camp counselors?
  • How does the camp ensure that high-quality staff is selected?
  • Is staff trained to provide social and emotional support?
  • How does the staff handle discipline? Are positive reinforcement and redirection utilized?
  • How does the camp communicate with parents/guardians?

Finally, be sure to take notes about each camp and capture your impressions to help with your decision. Choosing a summer camp is never easy, and even more difficult with the uncertainties of the pandemic. But given the challenges our children have been experiencing with virtual learning and physical distancing, it’s never been more important for them to get outside and explore nature.

Why Children Need Summer Camp Like Never Before

Summer camp gives children so much of what’s been missing since the pandemic began – space to explore nature, time to connect in person with other kids and positive role models, and the opportunity to embrace outdoor adventures like swimming, hiking, climbing, and boating.

Thankfully, this summer more children here on the Jersey Shore and across the country will get to experience the many benefits of camp now that summer camp programs will be reopening. While camp will look and operate a bit differently due to COVID-19 safety measures, the unique setting will continue to provide children opportunities to grow physically, emotionally, socially, and intellectually.

For more than 50 years, our camps at Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore have helped shape thousands of girls, giving them life skills and lasting memories of friendships that began around the campfire and blossomed on hikes through the woods.

Every year campers express how much fun they have at camp making friends and trying new activities. And parents remind us of the many ways that children thrive and grow in courage, confidence, and character at summer camp.

In an era when children are spending so much time apart, our camp team at Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore would like to share a few of the many benefits that children gain from joining a summer camp community:

Connecting to Nature and Friends

At camp, kids unplug from cell phones and digital devices and connect to outdoor experiences and to one another. Exploring the outdoors gives children an appreciation for nature, stirs their imagination, ignites their creativity, and supports healthy development. Interacting with new friends teaches kids to cultivate relationships, broaden their perspectives and build bridges of understanding.

Developing Confidence, Self- Esteem and Resilience

Children take on new challenges at camp every day, which helps boost their self-esteem and self-confidence. It’s a place for kids to practice making decisions for themselves and to try new things. Even if they fall short, they are supported by a caring community. Encouraging children to face challenges and take risks in a safe, supportive environment helps build resiliency.

Engaging with Positive Role Models

As a close-knit community away from home and school, summer camp introduces children to many different role models. Camp counselors and counselors in training (CIT) are often young adults and high school students who children easily relate to. Kids look up to these motivating mentors, who model what it means to be a strong leader as they guide their camp groups through daily activities. For many campers, this is where their own leadership journey begins.

Summer is an opportunity for children to break away from screens and get outdoors to discover nature.

How to Ease Summer Camp Anxiety

Summer vacation is just around the corner and for thousands of New Jersey families that means getting their children ready for a welcomed tradition after a grueling year: summer camp in the great outdoors.

Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore and camp operators across the Garden State are busy preparing for a safe and exciting summer for children as coronavirus restrictions are lifting and vaccinations are progressing, bringing us closer to the life we lived before the pandemic hit.

While keeping kids safe at camp has always been a top priority, this season we all need to be vigilant about the evolving COVID-19 safety protocols, as well as sensitive to the social and emotional needs of our children, whose lives were turned upside down by COVID-19.

For many children, time outdoors with fellow campers this summer will be a joyous return to the normalcy they’ve been missing. But others, especially younger children, may be less enthusiastic - even fearful - about separating from their family after long stretches of time together in isolation.

To help families prepare their children for summer camp during this tenuous time, the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore camp team, including our therapy advisor, has some tips to share for a strong start to adventures under the big summer sky:

Be Upbeat About Camp

In the weeks leading up to the first day of camp, chat with your kids about the fun and adventure they will be experiencing. Help them envision what a day of camp will be like from drop-off to pick-up. Get them excited about the choice of activities, the weekly themes and treasured camp traditions. And if they haven’t already visited the camp, now is a good time.

Talk About Safety

Be sure to go over the latest COVID safety guidelines with your children, reinforcing that camp is a place where they will be safe. Summer camps in New Jersey are following protocols from Governor Phil Murphy, Centers for Disease Control, and local health departments to ensure a safe environment. At this time, campers will need to wear face masks when they can’t distance. They’ll also likely be grouped in “cohorts” that stay together throughout the day and be reminded to wash their hands frequently. For younger children, help increase their spatial awareness by encouraging them to spread their arms like “butterfly wings.”

Create a Transition Plan

Families can create a smooth transition to summer camp much like they do for the first day of school. Adjust the kids’ bedtime and wake-up schedule the week before camp begins. When shopping for camp gear and clothes, let the kids chose their water bottle, backpack, bathing suit and towel. Replace screen time with family walks through the neighborhood or area parks to refocus children’s senses and increase their mindfulness.

It’s been a long and difficult year of change for everyone, especially our children. We look forward to giving them an unforgettable summer to explore, dream, grow and thrive outdoors - and the opportunity to just be kids.
