Service Opportunities

Journeys

There are plenty of Girl Scout Journeys that allow girls to explore the outdoors, learn about renewable resources, and Take Action to be stewards of the environment.

Do one of these Journeys with your troop, on your own, or attend a council program!

  • It's Your Planet– Love it!
  • Outdoor Journey
  • Think like a Citizen Scientist
  • Between Earth and Sky

Check out our council programs to work toward some of these journeys and more green opportunities!

Highest Awards

Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn.

All three awards give girls the chance to do big things while advocating for an issue they care about–– like the environment! So many Girl Scouts have dedicated their projects to green initiatives, and we are excited for more!

Explore more about the highest awards by attending a program or training, or visiting our website.

Indiana Dunes State Park

Visit one of the council's many environmental partners in the Green for Good initiative, Indiana Dunes State Park! Indiana Dunes State Park welcomes Girl Scouts to do service a the park through clean-up programs and preservation days. Contact Marie Laudeman (mlaudeman@dnr.in.gov) to set up a visit for your troop!

SCARCE

SCARCE (School & Community Assistance for Recylcing and Composting Education) is an award-winning environmental education non-profit that has spent over 25 years dedicating their efforts to creating sustainable communities.

SCARCE provides awesome environmentally focused classes, programs, and events for all ages! Here are a just a few of their awesome program options:

  • 3R's: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: a comprehensive program on the importance of the three R's.
  • Recylced Papermaking: a hands-on workshop to learn how recycled-content paper is made.
  • Waste Audit: observe trash production at your school and design creative solutions to reduce food waste!
  • Energy Bike: learn about energy production and conservation and generate your own renewable power source (with your legs!).

Find out about more programs, events, and the organization on the SCARCE website!

Take Action On Your Own

It's in Girl Scouts' DNA to be stewards of the environment. Even from the beginning of the Girl Scout movement, founder Juliette Gordon Low strongly encouraged girls to champion the cause of environmental conservation. Exploring and caring for the natural world is one of the cornerstones of the Girl Scout experience, reflected in the encouragement in the Girl Scout Promise and Law to “use resources wisely.”

Take action in your community by observing an environmental issue, brainstorming, solutions and taking actions! Organize a park clean up, add a recycling center at your school, or host a clothes drive. Do your research and find out who in your community is also advocating for environmental change.

The Mother Earth Project
The Mother Earth Project, MEP, is a nonprofit organization founded in 2015 by internationally renowned sculptor and scientist Barton Rubenstein and his family.

Their Parachutes For The Planet® is a project that encourages communities worldwide to decorate parachutes with artwork and concerned comments about the environment, march with them, and take them to their local politicians to demand better climate laws.

MEP provides free parachutes for Girl Scout troops–– troops across the country have already done beautiful projects with them! Find out on their website how your troop can get ahold of some parachutes to do some good for the planet.

Children's Environmental Health Toolkit for Parents and Educators

The Children's Environmental Health Committee of the American Public Health Association's Environment Section developed a new toolkit for parents and educators. It provides a curated list of educational resources that can be used to inform and engage youth in environmental public health—specifically about how the environment affects human health. Many activities in the toolkit can be performed at home during school closures!

Find the Environmental Health Toolkit here.

Green Gold Awards

So many Girl Scouts in the Gold Award Class of 2019 worked on environmentally-focused projects that we had to give them a shout out! Check out some of their inspiring ideas and accomplishments below.

Preserving the Monarch Butterfly Population
For her Gold Award, Sophie Cole passed on sustainable solutions to the issue by teaching seminars to elementary students, harveting and planting seeds, and distributing mudballs (or seed bombs) to help plants regrow, germinate, and multiply.

Textile Drive with SWALCO
It is estimated that 85% of textiles in the United States end up in landfills. For her Gold Award, Kari Alexandra decided to tackle this by collecting over 1,500 textiles at a recyling drive at her high school. She then donated the textiles to SWALCO, an organization that recycles fabric into usable new products.

Say No 2 Straws
Samantha started the campaign “#sayno2straws.” Along with the hashtag, she created a websiteInstagram hashtag, and promotional video and educated girls at the Bolingbrook Jamboree on the importance of using sustainable products. Later, she made a speech and showed her video to the whole camp to raise awareness for her project and spread the word of sustainability.

Lake Bluff Park District Ravine
Skyler wanted to improve the natural hiking path in the Lake Bluff Park District ravine, as well as expand the options for summer camps, local hikers, and future generations. Skyler’s project culminated in the design, construction, and installation of two wooden boardwalks throughout the ravine, allowing drainage and keeping foot traffic from pounding roots down further.

Community Partners

There are many community locations that Girl Scouts can visit to engage with the environment, learn ways to take action, and even earn a badge!
