Awareness Flags

Girl Scouts Heart of the South is partnering with the Memphis Child Advocacy Center for Child Abuse Prevention Awareness Month in April.  Girl Scouts are encouraged to create Awareness Flags in support of the safety and well-being of children everywhere.  Watch the video tutorial on how to create your flag out of paper or fabric and then put your creativity to work to create an Awareness Flag that represents Courage, Hope, Love or Kindness.  After you’ve created your masterpiece, take a photo with you and your flag and send it to Girl Scouts Heart of the South using our submission form.  You might just see your creation on the council’s Facebook page or the Child Advocacy Center’s Facebook page in April! #GSHSAwarenessFlags #CAPMonth901

The Child Advocacy Center’s mission is to serve children who are victims of abuse through prevention, education and intervention.

Blankets for Nursing Home Facilities

Make lap blankets for senior citizens living in nursing facilities.  Your donations will need to be delivered at a later date, but now is the perfect time to create blankets that will be very much appreciated by the residents.  Directions for easy, no-sew blankets can be found on Pinterest:  No sew fleece or Big loop knit

Blessing Boxes

Gather non-perishable food items by having girls leave them on the troop leader or designated parent’s porch.  Place items in a plastic or otherwise weather-proof and secure container and place them throughout the community near Little Libraries, community parks or community centers.

Community Gardens

With your immediate family, visit a local community garden or park and pull weeds, add new mulch and clean up the garden for others to enjoy!

Flag Retirement

Use your Social Media skills and let people know that you’re a Girl Scout and you can take their tattered and worn out American Flags for retirement.  Place a collection box in a public place and direct people to leave their flags in the box.  Study up on Flag Retirement Ceremonies and hold a flag retirement ceremony in your own backyard.  Be sure to follow your city’s laws and regulations on open flames and burning in your area.

Kindness Messages

Paint Rocks with inspirational messages to leave throughout your community for others to find while out walking.

Litter Pickup

It’s good to get outside and take a walk for some fresh air!  Before you head out, grab a trash bag and pick up trash that you see along your route.  Avoid high-traffic areas and busy streets.  Wear bright or reflective clothing and always walk with an adult.

Masks for Healthcare Workers
