Did you know? In the United States, 74% of girls express interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math in middle school. By high school, only 0.3% girls plan to major in Computer Science—Girl Scouts is on a mission to change that (GSRI: Generation STEM)!
STEM Programs
At Girl Scouts of Northern California, STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) encompasses everything from protecting California’s beloved natural resources, to building robots with NASA and Google. In our diverse set of STEM programs, girls develop leadership abilities and technical skills that not only spark an invested interest in science and technology, but also set them up for future success. Art is generally integrated into all of our programs.
When girls participate in Girl Scout STEM programs, they benefit in four important ways:
- STEM Interest: Girls are excited about STEM subjects and want to learn more about them.
- STEM Confidence: Girls have confidence in their STEM skills and abilities.
- STEM Competence: Girls think scientifically to solve problems.
- STEM Value: Girls learn the importance and relevance of STEM to people and society.

There are many ways for STEM professionals and students pursuing STEM fields to share their interests with girls. Find out how you can inspire the next generation of STEM leaders!
Interested in ways to have your children be engaged and excited about STEM, school, and learning? Check out Stellar Adventures, an organization that provides more access to the education of astronomy and supporting space science! Stellar Adventures began when a Girl Scout Ambassador noticed little space science education in school curriculum. For her Gold Award, she made it her mission to have astronomy blast off and excite kids to join the space science journey!
With the combination of interactive educational material and fun
activities and crafts, students will be excited to learn more and
continue their quest in space science learning. Students will be
inspired and empowered to pursue space science and very possibly be
the change for new research to solve earth’s problems.
Visit the Girl Scout Shop for new 2020 badges and check out the Award and Badge Explorer for details on every badge a Girl Scout can earn.
