Girl Scouting from Home
As Girl Scouts, we live by the motto "be prepared" - and that includes when the unexpected happens. We know that this is a challenging time for Girl Scouts—staying home from school and away from friends is a significant change in her routine that can make her feel disconnected. However, there are many ways she can still participate in Girl Scout activities and earn awards, even at home! Our Girl Scout sisterhood will help us stay connected during these unprecedented times. We are in this together!

- Construction Paper
- Ruler
- Scissors
- 1 straight pin
- 2 beads
- A pencil with an eraser or a straw
- Crayons (optional)
▶ ACTIVITY: Making a Pinwheel
- Cut out a 6 x 6 inch square from the construction paper.
- Using a ruler, draw a straight line from one corner to the opposite corner of the square. Do the same for the other two corners.
- Make a cut 2 inches long along each of the lines from the corner toward the center of the square. Slide a bead onto the straight pin.
- Fold the four blades as shown, but don’t crease the folds.
- Pass the straight pin through the center of the pinwheel; this will hold the four blades together.
- Slide the other bead onto the straight pin.
- Stick the straight pin into the side of the eraser on your pencil.

- Using your current age, try to estimate or measure how old you are in the number of days.
- How do you use math in your day to day life?

✎ SUPPLIES:
- ¼ cup vinegar
- A small plastic bottle with a neck
- 2 tablespoons of baking soda
- A small balloon
▶ ACTIVITY: Making a Pinwheel
- Pour the vinegar into the plastic bottle.
- Stretch open the balloon mouth and carefully pour the baking soda into the balloon.
- Place the balloon mouth over the bottle with the balloon to the side so that the baking soda does not fall into the bottle.
- Make sure that the balloon mouth is tightly secure around the neck of the soda bottle.
- Shake the balloon so that the baking soda falls into the balloon.
- What happens? Can you figure out why?

- Different objects you can find around the house
▶ ACTIVITY:
We will be playing Mine Field! You will need 2 or more people for this activity.
- Find an open area (this can be in your house or in your backyard) and find a partner.
- Take your partner and blindfold one person using a bandana.
- Take the objects you have collected and scattered them along the open area. Some suggestions of objects you can use are… Stuffed animals, traffic cones, any toys, pillows, rocks (if outside), shoes, water hose (if outside), etc.
- After you make your field, determine the "start" point and the "end" point.
- With one partner blindfolded at the start point, the other partner begins to verbally guide the blindfolded partner across the “Mine Field” by advising the other which way to go and avoid the objects on the floor.
- Once the blindfolded partner reaches the end, they can switch places and go again and mix up the “mine field”.
SIDE NOTE: More than two people can play. You can make it into a race with two other people or teams. It’s all up to you!

After completing the mirror, each girl should look into their reflection and recite: “Mirror, Mirror, in my hand, I want to be the healthiest that I can. One way I am healthy is…” Say one healthy habit you practice at the end of the sentence.

Popcorn Push-ups
- One girl will lie face-down on the ground with her hands, palms down slightly wider than her shoulder width, flat on the ground under her body. She will raise her body up by extending her arms and keeping her body straight.
- The bowl of popcorn will be placed beneath the girl’s face.
- The girl will lower her body to the ground by bending her arms while keeping her body straight. She will use her mouth to catch a piece of popcorn.
- The girl will again push her body upward and eat the popcorn. The other girls will count each push-up out loud.
- Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the girl says that she is finished.
- Each girl will do as many push-ups as she is able. The girl with the most push-ups will be congratulated!

▶ ACTIVITY:
Let's make tissue paper flowers!
- Cut tissue paper into any size square depending on how big you want it.
- Don’t go smaller than 5”x5” square. Our sizes vary from 5”x5” –6”x6”.
- Fold tissue paper into a fan and staple it.
- Cut the corners into either rounded, triangular or rectangular.
- Start gently pulling the layers towards the center alternating from side to side.

Going Outside: With a trusted adult and find items outside to stick to your bracelet – make sure to practice the Leave No Trace Principles.
While outside, also find items you can also use to make music – it can be items you put on your bracelet or items found in general
Making Your Bracelet:
Make a bracelet using masking tape, making sure the sticky part is facing out. Of the items you found, take the ones you like and place them onto your bracelet. You could like the way the object feels, the way it smells, or what it sounds like when you tap or drop it.
Once you're done, talk about your bracelet and explain why you chose the items you did and what your favorite part of the activity was. Take artsy pictures of your bracelet and share! Be sure to also share the music you created, if possible.

Are you ready? Together with a trusted adult, go outside in nature and collect leaves and rocks that are on the ground – when you are out on your journey hunting for items tell us about what sounds you hear and colors you see out in nature! Remember to practice the Leave No Trace principles – do not pick leaves off trees, pick them off the ground.
Take your rocks and leaves home, make sure to clean them off and begin painting! Get creative! You can paint designs, write inspirational messages, paint different animals or bugs onto your rocks.

This is step 2, create static electricity, of the Home Science badge for Brownies.
✎ SUPPLIES:
Balloon Food Coloring Spoon 1 empty paper/plastic cup 1 cup of water thumb tack 1 large bowl
▶ ACTIVITY:
We will be bending water with the power of static electricity!
What Happens: The water bends toward the balloon.
How it works: Your hair has a neutral electrical charge. When you rub the balloon against your head, the balloon takes some of the electrons from your hair, which leaves your hair positively charged and the balloon negatively charged. Your positively charged hair is now attracted to the negatively charged balloon, which is why your hair moves towards it.
Water, also known as H2O, is made up of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen. The hydrogen atoms have a slightly positive charge. Similar to your positive hair, the hydrogen atoms are attracted and move towards the negative balloon!

Floating Egg
- 1 Glass Cup
- Salt
- Spoon
- Water (Warm)
- Tablespoon (to measure the salt)
- 1 egg
Rainbow in a Cup
- Red, Yellow, Green & Blue food coloring
- spoon
- tablespoon (to measure the sugar)
- Measuring Cup
- 1 Glass Cup
- 3 other cups each with ¼ cup warm water
- sugar
▶ ACTIVITY:
Floating Egg
- Fill a glass cup with water & place the egg in the glass. What happened when you placed the egg in the water? Did it float or sink?
- How can we use science to make the egg float? Density! If we change the density of the water, the egg can float.
- Remove the egg from the glass.
- Add 4 tablespoons of salt & stir so the salt dissolves as much as possible. If you have trouble, warm up the water.
- Carefully add your egg again. Observe. What happened? Did it float or sink?
Rainbow in a Cup
- Fill 4 cups with ¼ cup of warm water each.
- Create each color: Red – add food coloring; Yellow – add food coloring and 1 tablespoon of sugar; Green – add food coloring and 3 tablespoons of sugar; Blue – add food coloring and 4 tablespoons of sugar
- Stir to dissolve sugar. This step is very important - if the sugar is not dissolved, the experiment will not work. If you have trouble getting it to dissolve, try heating the cup in the microwave for a few seconds.
- Take your blue water glass & spoon in half of the green water. Pour on the side of the glass and let the water run down the side.
- Repeat with the yellow and red water.
- You have a rainbow in a glass!

Plastic Cup Lantern
✎ Supplies:
- Clear plastic cup
- A whole puncher
- Box cutter
- Colored paper
- Scissors
- String/wire
- Double sided tape/glue
- Hot glue & glue gun
- Tea light/glow sticks
- Markers to decorate
▶ Steps:
- Cut a whole at the bottom of the cup. You want to start small and cut what is needed so that your tea light fits tightly in the whole. If it is too loose, the tea light will not stay in place.
- Draw a circle on the colored paper that is about 1-2 inches wider than the top of your cup. Then cut it out.
- Cut a slit on the circle that only goes from one side to the center. Then overlay the two sides to create a lantern-top look. Tape or glue them together.
- Hole punch two sides of the lantern-top close to the edges.
- Cut a piece of string (your desired length) and then add the string in the hole-punched holes.
- After completing all the steps for the top, hot glue the top to the cup.
- Your lantern should be all put together at this point and is now ready to decorate! Feel free to use any decorating materials- stickers, markers, glitter, etc.

📗 ACTIVITY: Make Banana Nutella Rolls!
Ingredients:
- 1 can crescent rolls (8 rolls)
- 1/4 or 1/3 cup Nutella
- 2 bananas
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1-3 teaspoons cinnamon
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Lightly spray a baking sheet or line with parchment paper or foil.
- Open the can of crescent rolls and unroll.
- Spread some Nutella on the larger end of each roll.
- Cut each banana into 4 segments. Place one segment on each roll over the Nutella.
- Roll up the dough and seal using your fingers. You don't want all your Nutella oozing out!
- In a bowl stir together the cinnamon and sugar.
- Toss each roll in the cinnamon and sugar. Coat it well!
- Place the rolls on the baking sheet.
- Bake at 375 degrees for about 12 minutes, or until browned on the bottom.
James and the Giant Peach

📗 ACTIVITY:
Make your own Peach Tartlets at home with your family! Follow the recipe in the description to make a delicious James and the Giant Peach inspired treat. It’s so easy and fun for the whole family to do!
INGREDIENTS:
- 1 sheet (1/2 lb puff pastry) – I used crescent roll dough
- 1 egg, beaten well with a fork
- 2 large (1/2 lb) fresh peaches (or use canned/drained peaches)
- 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup sliced almonds (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Preheat oven to 400˚F. Thaw puff pastry 20 minutes at room temperature, or until you can unfold the pastry. Cut pastry into 9 equal-sized squares and place on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing them 1-inch apart.
- Beat 1 egg in a small bowl and set aside.
- Slice peaches into 1/3″ thick slices and place them in a medium mixing bowl. Sprinkle with 2 Tbsp sugar, 1 Tbsp flour, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp vanilla and gently fold together with a spatula.
- Layer 3 to 4 peach slices over the center of each pastry square, being careful not to get peach juice on the surrounding pastry. Brush pastry edges generously with beaten egg. Sprinkle with sliced almonds.
- Bake on the center oven rack at 400˚F for 17-19 minutes or until puffed and golden at the edges, turning the sheet halfway through baking. Tip: Do not over-bake. It browns very quickly towards the end. Remove peach pastry from oven and let cool on the pan for 10 minutes.

INGREDIENTS:
- 1 lb. ground turkey browned and drained
- 15 oz. can refried beans
- 15 oz. can diced tomatoes, drained
- 3/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- 1 tsp. garlic powder
- 1 tsp. onion powder
- 1 tsp. cumin or chili powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/4 tsp. pepper
- 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes
- 10 6-inch flour tortilla shells (fajita size)
INSTRUCTIONS:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Spray muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray.
- Brown meat, drain, and return to pan.
- Stir in diced tomatoes, refried beans, and spices.
- Fold flour tortillas to fit into muffin tins.
- Divide meat mixture evenly between tortillas.
- Top with cheese and desired toppings.
- Bake 8-10 minutes or until shells are crispy and browned.
Optional Toppings: Salsa, tomato, onion, black olives, cilantro, greek yogurt or sour cream
Note: Use 1 packet of taco seasoning to replace spices if desired.

All you need is a lemon and some baking soda. You can even add food coloring to make it look extra magical.
With your parents help, cut off a small part of the top of the lemon. Use a butter knife to loosen up the inside. If you're using food coloring, add it into the lemon now. When you’re ready, add some baking soda into the lemon, mix it quickly, then watch your cauldron bubble!

Example activities:
- Styrofoam Plates: All you need are 2 styrofoam plates and a cloth. Put one plate face down on a flat surface and rub the bottom of the plate with a cloth. Then, try and put the second plate on top of the first. Watch as they repel!
- Balloon: Take a balloon and blow it up. Then rub the balloon on the top of your head and watch your hair float towards the balloon!

⚡ ACTIVITY - Make Your Own Butterbeer Popcorn!
To celebrate our Book Club completing our first chapter book, we're going to celebrate by making Harry Potter Butter Beer Popcorn! Follow this super easy recipe and create a wonderful treat for you and your family to enjoy!
Ingredients:
- 1 Microwave bag of popcorn (or a batch of air popped popcorn)
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 2 Tbsp. honey
- 12-14 marshmallows
- 1 tsp butter extract
- 1/2 cup butterscotch chips
- 1/4 cup milk chocolate chips
Steps:
Pop your popcorn. After it's popped:
- Add your butterscotch chips and chocolate chips to the popcorn.
- Melt butter in sauce pan then add brown sugar, honey, marshmallows, vanilla and butter extract.
- Mix until bubbly.
- Pour mixture over the popcorn and mix.

My 2020 COVID-19 Time Capsule

Natalie Long is a graphic designer and mom from Canada. She created "My 2020 COVID-19 Time Capsule" worksheets as a way for her now eight-year-old daughter, Olivia to keep track of what is happening day-to-day. Long wrote that “we are all living through history right now and I thought a ‘time capsule’ would be an amazing way to document this experience to look back on, these worksheets were created by me for my family but I wanted to share with all my fans!”
The 11-page document consists of various activities like interviewing parents, listing favorite foods and writing a letter to themselves.

Now is a great time for your girl to get creative on how she can give back to her community! Need some inspiration?:
• Make cards and notes for first responders, local grocery store workers and nursing home residents. For safety purposes, we recommend making the card/note, taking a picture and tagging them on social media or emailing it to them.
• Some nursing homes may let you video call with residents to help them feel connected! Contact your local senior center to learn what works best for them.

Calling all helpers! Do you love to help others? Are you good at sewing? Have a heart for people who are in need in your community? Well, we have a project we think you’ll love.
At-risk patients, like younger children and seniors, as well as cancer patients, are more vulnerable to getting sick and there is a shortage of face masks to go around. These face masks help prevent sickness.
And there is a way you can help! You can help by sewing handmade cotton face masks and then donating them to your local JOANN Fabrics and Crafts Store or call your local nursing homes, cancer centers or children's hospitals to see if they are accepting donations.

Letter Writing Service Project

The idea is simple: girls write letters to people in nursing homes, senior residences, and assisted living facilities, including the dedicated staff and caregivers. This long-distance hug is a way to share your good thoughts with these vulnerable and loved community members.
Here’s how it works:

Ask your girls (and their friends!) to write letters to senior and caretakers using our tips (PDF).

You can mail letters to one of the facilities (PDF) or reach out to a local assisted living center and find out how they would like to receive your troop’s letters. You could collect and deliver them (using no-contact practices), have girls mail them individually, or even deliver them via email. Don’t forget to include a note to tell the staff about the letters you’re sending (DOC).

Take a picture of your letter packet and post it to your social media networks using #GirlScoutsGiveBack (and be sure to tag us @girlscouts).

Don't forget to come back here and log the number of letters to add them to the national campaign! Let’s see how many letters of love and care our Movement can send!
